The History of the Court of Kent
In 1997 a group of carnival entrepreneurs came together and decided to form a new Carnival Association. This was decided because they and many others felt that a Carnival Queen's year came and went so quickly and that there was nothing for them to move on to. It was determined that this new association would only be open to young ladies aged 16 years and over who had held either a Rosebud, Junior Court or Senior Court Sash from any Kent Carnival Association and lived within Kent. The people behind the idea were Mick Ryan, John & Rose Trickey, Denis Bond, Peter Bloore and Georgina Wadey - the association was called "Kent Carnival Court". The first selection took place in 1998 and the new court plus float, took part in its first season.
Over the years things have changed slightly, it was felt that Kent should be seen as the next level for a Carnival Queen to move up to so therefore the float was dropped and the role of the Court became one as more of a hostess role to the the attending Mayors and Dignitaries on behalf of the Carnival Association hosting the event. The name also was changed to the now "Court of Kent". One thing that remains constant with the court is the founding Chairman Mrs Georgina Wadey who now has taken the role of our Life President on the retirement of Mrs Marlene Burnham.
Every year the Court of Kent is invited not only to local carnivals but also other Mayoral and County Events. The Court of Kent hosts three of it's own events, these being:- Selection event; The Senior Court of Kent Ball, The Junior Court of Kent Buffet evening, with the latter two both including an evening competition. At our recent Queen's Ball, the Guests of Honour were The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Canterbury.
The Court of Kent has many fantastic sponsors and friends and is a proud supporter of the Hounds for Heroes charity for the 2019 season.
